Unique Entity Number ( UEN )

An oversea prospect client asked me about UEN. What is it ? How does it benefit us ? Who will get UEN and who will not ?
Simple question, but a little bit technical to respond…
Let me share …
What is UEN?
a. UEN is the standard identification number of an entity
b. UEN shall be for registered entities as NRIC is for Singapore citizens
c. The UEN uniquely identifies the entity
How does UEN benefit me?
a. Your UEN is your one number for convenient interaction with government agencies
b. Whether it is filing your corporate tax returns or applying for import and export permit, you will no longer need to use different numbers to interact with different government agencies. Your UEN will be all that you need.
Who will get UEN?
* UEN will be issued to entities (such as businesses, local companies, LLPs, societies & representative offices) that
a. have multiple interactions with government agencies
b. are recognised by a UEN Issuance Agency (e.g. ACRA )
UEN will NOT be issued to:
a. Individuals
– They will interact with government agencies using their NRIC numbers
b. Entities that have no or only one-off interactions with just one government agency
– E.g. overseas company that sells products to government agencies on a one-off basis
c. Sub-entities such as branches and divisions of an entity
However, some government agencies may choose to add sub-entity codes to UEN in their systems if they need to identify & interact with branches & divisions.
Who will issue UEN to me?
a. Businesses & local companies currently registered with ACRA will retain their ACRA Registration Number as their UEN.
b. Other than business & local registered companies, all other registered entities will be issued with a new UEN.
Hope above clarifies.
